18 enthusiastic young men and women met for a two-day workshop on Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) in Katima Mulilo on 21 and 22 February 2022. Organised by the NSFM-Project, this workshop is part of numerous workshops that are aiming at improving knowledge and skills on SFM among Community Forest (CF) members, Traditional Authority (TA) representatives and Multipliers such as leading members of communities or youth representatives.
The first day of the workshop dealt with the basics of SFM, the role of CFs in SFM, the woodlands of Namibia and the importance of forest inventories. Moreover, the trainer Ms Daisy Manungo took the workshop participants for a practical exercise on forest inventory. The participants learned to use GPS, calibre and measure tape while practising an inventory step by step. The second workshop day dealt with the topics of forest fire management as part of SFM, forest laws and policies and permits, harvesting methods and agroforestry as well as illegal fencing.
All participants were equipped with educational material which has been launched recently in four different languages (English, Silozi, Rumanyo and Rukwangali). At the end of workshop day 2, all participants passed the brief examen with excellence. Everyone was awarded a certificate, a project shirt as well as a tree seedling to remind them daily of their responsibility in SFM.
