14 Multipliers from Kavango West Region Trained on Sustainable Forest Management
From 18 to 19 May 2022, a two-day workshop on Sustainable Forest Management was organised for 14 energetic young men from Community Forests from Kavango West Region in Nkurenkuru. Organised by the NSFM Project, this workshop is part of several workshops that are aiming at improving knowledge and skills on Sustainable Forest Management among Community Forest members, Traditional Authority representatives, as well as Multipliers such as leading members of communities or youth representatives.
Day one of the workshop was focusing on the following topics: the basics of Sustainable Forest Management, the role of Community Forests in Sustainable Forest Management, the woodlands of Namibia, harvesting methods, and agroforestry. The second workshop day dealt with the topics of forest fire management as part of Sustainable Forest Management, forest laws and policies and permits, illegal fencing and the importance of forest inventories. The trainer took the workshop participants for a practical exercise on forest inventory where the participants learned to use GPS, calliper, and measure tape while practising an inventory step by step.
All participants were equipped with educational materials such as fact sheets and posters. At the end of workshop day 2, all participants passed the brief examen with excellence. Everyone was awarded a certificate, a project shirt and a tree seedling to remind them daily of their responsibility in SFM.
